Cybersecurity Awareness Month: Cybersecurity First, Candy Second

Don’t Let Hackers Haunt Your Business This October

October is the month of costumes, candy corn, and things that go bump in the night. It’s also Cybersecurity Awareness Month, making it the perfect time to focus on the threats that should really keep business owners and IT leaders up at night. A ransomware attack can lock up your operational technology at 2 a.m. Meanwhile, one convincing phishing email can hand the keys to your network to a cybercriminal dressed as a trusted vendor.

At Intelos, we think October is the perfect time to talk about the real haunted house in your industry: an unprotected IT environment. Each October, organizations nationwide recognize Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and we’re using this moment to share practical tips, highlight what we’ve been building for our customers, and remind you why having the right managed security partner matters more than ever.

Grab a handful of candy — this is a treat, not a trick.

The Threat Landscape Is Not Taking a Holiday

Before we get to the tips, let’s set the stage. Cybersecurity Awareness Month is an important reminder that today’s threats extend far beyond October. Over the past several months, we’ve been writing about the specific cybersecurity challenges facing companies. In August, we examined Zero Trust Architecture for Energy Networks — a framework built on the principle that no user, device, or system should be trusted by default, whether inside or outside the network perimeter. In September, we dove deep into Ransomware Defense Strategies for Energy Providers, exploring how threat actors are specifically targeting critical infrastructure and what layered defenses look like in practice.

These are not hypothetical threats. Energy sector attacks have increased sharply, and adversaries know that operational disruptions carry outsized pressure on organizations to pay ransom or make quick, compromised decisions.

The good news? You don’t have to face this alone — and you don’t have to wait for an incident to get protected.

5 Cybersecurity Tips That Are Sweeter Than Halloween Candy

Think of these as your trick-or-treat bag of quick wins. Each one reduces your attack surface and makes your business a harder target.

Tip 1 — Don’t Open the Door to Strangers: Train Your Team on Phishing

Phishing is the #1 entry point for cyberattacks. Hackers dress up their emails to look like a trusted vendor, a bank, or even your CEO. Regular security awareness training teaches your team to look past the costume. Conduct simulated phishing exercises at least quarterly to help reduce your organization’s click rate on malicious links.

Quick action: Schedule a phishing simulation for your team this month. Ask Intelos about our managed security awareness training programs.

Tip 2 — Guard Your Candy Bowl: Implement Multi-Factor Authentication Everywhere

If passwords are the front door, multi-factor authentication (MFA) is the deadbolt, the chain lock, and the Ring camera all in one. MFA ensures that a stolen password alone isn’t enough to grant access to your systems. Enable it on email, remote access, cloud platforms, and any administrative portal.

Quick action: Audit your critical systems today. If any of these systems lack MFA, make enabling it your number one priority this week.

Tip 3 — Know What’s in Your Candy: Patch and Update Religiously

Unpatched software is the unlocked window that ransomware operators crawl through. Cybercriminals actively identify and exploit vulnerabilities in operating systems, firmware, and applications. A disciplined patch management program — ideally automated and monitored — closes those windows before attackers find them.

Quick action: Review your patch compliance report. If you don’t have one, that’s a gap Intelos can close.

Tip 4 — Don’t Let the Haunted House Get Dark: Protect Your Backups

Ransomware’s power comes from its ability to make your data inaccessible. Organizations with clean, tested, offline backups can recover without paying a ransom. Your backup strategy should follow the 3-2-1 rule: three copies of data, on two different media types, with one stored offsite or in an immutable cloud environment.

Quick action: When did you last test your recovery process? If you can’t answer that confidently, call us.

Tip 5 — Trust No One in a Mask: Adopt Zero Trust Principles

As we discussed in our August deep-dive, Zero Trust is no longer a niche security philosophy — it’s a core architecture for any organization serious about protecting its network. Verify every user, every device, every time. Segment your network so that a breach in one area can’t cascade across your entire environment.

Quick action: Ask Intelos about a Zero Trust readiness assessment for your environment.

Intelos Is Earning Its Stripes — SOC 2 Type 2 Attestation Coming Soon

We want to share some exciting news that we believe speaks directly to the question every company should be asking their MSP: “How do I know you’re actually protecting my environment the way you say you are?”

We are proud to announce that Intelos is wrapping up its first SOC 2 Type 2 audit, with our full attestation report expected by the end of 2026. This is a significant milestone — and a meaningful one for you.

What is SOC 2 Type 2? A SOC 2 Type 2 audit is conducted by an independent third-party auditor and evaluates not just whether a company has the right security controls in place (that’s Type 1), but whether those controls have been consistently operating effectively over an extended observation period (that’s Type 2). It covers trust service criteria including security, availability, processing integrity, confidentiality, and privacy.

Why does this matter to you? Fewer than 5% of US managed service providers have made this compliance investment. Most MSPs operate without any independent verification of their internal controls. By completing our SOC 2 Type 2 audit, Intelos is placing itself among a top tier of security-first MSPs — ones whose practices aren’t just claimed, but independently verified.

When you work with Intelos, you’re not just trusting our word. You’re working with a partner whose security posture has been examined, tested, and attested to by an independent auditor. In an industry where trust is everything, that distinction matters.

What’s Coming Next

October is just one stop on our ongoing journey with you. Our security series continues to build:

  • November — We’ll shift focus to cloud strategy for energy operations: how to modernize infrastructure without compromising resilience or compliance.
  • December — We’ll close out the year with strategic IT planning for 2027, helping organizations think ahead about technology roadmaps, vendor strategy, and budget alignment.

Cybersecurity isn’t a one-month campaign — it’s a year-round commitment. And the conversations we’ve started about Zero Trust, ransomware defense, and security-first partnerships are the foundation for everything that comes next.

The Bottom Line: Choose a Partner Who Takes the Treat Seriously

Cybersecurity Awareness Month is a great reminder, but the threats your organization faces don’t follow the calendar. Hackers don’t take October off. They’re counting on you to treat security as a seasonal priority rather than a core business function.

At Intelos, cybersecurity isn’t a feature — it’s the foundation of everything we do for our clients in the energy sector. From Zero Trust architecture to ransomware defense to our upcoming SOC 2 Type 2 attestation, we take security seriously. We are committed to being the most trusted and rigorous managed security partner you’ll find.

Don’t let hackers haunt your business this October — or any other month.
